Sarcopenia
One of the most important things seniors can do for their health is maintain and build muscle. Muscle loss with age, known as sarcopenia, can lead to weakness, poor balance, falls, loss of independence, and slower recovery from illness.
The good news is that older adults can still build significant muscle and strength well into their 70s, 80s, and beyond.
The two keys are progressive resistance training and adequate protein intake.
Understanding Anabolic Resistance
As we age, our muscles become less responsive to protein and exercise.
This is called anabolic resistance.
A younger person may stimulate muscle growth with a relatively small amount of protein, while an older adult often requires a larger amount to achieve the same effect.
Because of anabolic resistance, seniors generally need:

- 2–3 sessions weekly
- Full-body workouts
- At least one day of recovery between sessions
Note:
You can increase the resistance by add more weight or just by moving through the range of motion super slowly and try to incorporate the deep breathing into the exercise. Exhale (breathe out) on the most difficult part of the exercise.
