Fall Prevention for Seniors

Research

Fall prevention programmes are vital for seniors because falls are the leading cause of injury, hospitalization, and loss of independence in older adults.

Knee replacement, rotator cuff injuries, and hip surgeries are all on the rise.

Structured plans lower fall risks by up to 34% through targeted strength training, balance exercises, medication reviews, home safety modifications, and the food that you eat.

Key Components

  • Gentle movements like Qi Gong, yoga, and tai chi
  • Medication checks like drugs that cause dizziness
  • Home hazard audits like grab bars, better lighting
  • Vision and hearing tests

Goals

  1. Develop a stronger core.
  2. Build leg strength.
  3. Train static and dynamic balance.
  4. Teach safe daily movement habits.
  5. Feel more secure when moving.

Your Programme

The Warmup … lasting about 5 minutes and wake up your major muscles groups.

Core muscles located close to your spine like your transverse abdominus around your middle, your multifidi along your spine, and your QL (quadratus lumborum) on your sides keep your hips stable, need to be strengthen daily.

And don’t forget your diaphragm and your pelvic floor muscles. You will need all the oxygen you can get to stay healthy.

Balance is all about knowing where you are in time and space and keeping all the muscles strong that help you with that.

Try these four routines

  1. One weight 2. Chair aerobics. 3. Head to Toe. 4. Lucky 7 stretches

or try the Big 3 that can be done anywhere anytime. You might need a walking stick … hmmm?

and finally, these exercises are probably the most popular …

Let’s Go for a Walk

All the research done i.e. the Otago fall prevention programme at the Otago university in New Zealand, suggests that seniors should walk more, maybe even daily.

So after your warmup, then balance exercises, followed by lower body strength training which of course includes deep breathing,

go for a walk!.

Take Away

You should understand that targeted lower body strength training, with progressive balance training, and a structured walking plan done at least 3x per week will reduce falls and other related injuries.

Be consistent and informed and watch what you put in your mouth!!!
