Canada’s Movement Guide for Seniors

What is it?

Here’s an overview of Canada’s 24‑Hour Movement Guidelines, which integrate physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and sleep across age groups:

These “Guidelines” provide you with a holistic blueprint for a healthy day—balancing activity, sitting, and sleep—rather than focusing on one behavior in isolation

Recommendations !

At least 150 min/week of moderate-to-vigorous aerobic activity (in 10‑minute bouts), plus muscle and bone strengthening on 2+ days.

Limit sedentary time to ≤ 8 hr/day, with ≤ 3 hr/day recreational screen time.

Sleep: 7–9 hr/night (ages 18–64), 7–8 hr/night (65+)

Why it Matters ?

A growing body of research shows that balancing movement, strength training, healthy eating and sleep management in a 24-hour cycle supports:

  • Physical health (e.g., cardiovascular, bone health)
  • Mental well-being (e.g., mood, cognition)
  • Chronic disease prevention

Putting it into Practice

Think of your whole day:

  1. Move more: build in light and moderate-to-vigorous activity.
  2. Sit less: reduce screen time, take active breaks.
  3. Sleep well: prioritize consistent, sufficient sleep.
  4. Eat healthy by following Canada’s Food Guide

Practical Examples

  1. Resistance Training …

2. Aerobics ,,,

3. Healthy eating …

4. Stress Management …

5. Sleep tight / Don’t let the bed bugs bite

Take Away

Experts generally agree that lifestyle choices significantly impact how long people live.

Key factors include diet, exercise, sleep, stress management, and social connections.

Additionally, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are crucial for longevity.

People in “blue zones,” regions where individuals live exceptionally long lives, often live longer due to a combination of lifestyle factors that promote health and longevity. These factors include a predominantly plant-based diet, regular physical activity, strong social connections, a sense of purpose, and a low-stress lifestyle.

  1. Hello Bob!
This was very interesting I was especially interested in the eating segment and that plate in front of you would be 3 meals for me LOL

I am now 86 and none of the things you talked about that happen when we age applies to me. I try real hard to eat well and watch everything I eat. I am still strong, can do almost all the things I did at 70 . I sleep well bed at 10 pm up at 6:00 to 6:30am I take no medications. I prepare all my food eat a lot of fruit and veggies drink water but I know not enough keep trying. Stretch every morning before a hot shower, 30 mins on one of my machines if and when I have not been working outside. I have some discomfort in my back and of course my knees (that is not new) but a sit down for a rest for about 20 mins and I am good to go again. I eat my main meal mid day 3:00pm or so, and have a shake with something small for my dinner. The shake is from Bodi what they call (a daily dose of dense nutrition) I am not looking to have a great body at this age just a healthy one.
I have no stress in my life I am very much alone most of the time and am very happy. I love my home and yard and keep it almost perfect just for me. I am very grateful and fortunate for all that I have, John saw to that and I do pray every day and thank God for everything.
Also my eyes are better now than when I moved here, no glasses necessary.
I am not happy with the changes in my body in the last year, but it is what it is and I dress accordingly to be strong and healthy is important to me now above everything else.

I hope you Sue and David are well and you have a great summer
    Hugs Carole
