Hi, Bob here from Silverfox Fitness. At this time, I’m 78 years of age, and to some people, that’s considered “old”. But I’m a believer that age is just a number, though statistics will argue otherwise. Today I wanted to broach the topic of why some older folks get grumpier as they age—some might even call it “angry” or “frustrated”.

You see, it runs in my family, which brought it to mind. My father had it, in his later years, and dad (his name was Ron) had a history of smoking, drinking, and eating Harvey’s hamburgers. Some might say that would have been a factor in his overall mood, which got increasingly sullen and surly. Not all of life’s circumstances—bills to pay, sore limbs, family dysfunction—can account for some of the moods he got in.
And I will admit, it affects me too. And my son, now 48, also goes through some wild mood swings sometimes.
So, what causes people to get surlier as they age? Is it really an age thing? Something physiological? Genetics? We’ll look at the most prevalent 7 reasons.

Let’s start with what’s happening inside our heads. As we age, our brains undergo chemical changes that can directly affect our moods and emotional responses.
What’s Happening: Our brains produce chemicals called neurotransmitters that regulate mood, including serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. As we age, production of these “feel-good” chemicals naturally declines. Serotonin, in particular, plays a crucial role in regulating mood, sleep, and appetite. Lower levels are associated with increased irritability, anxiety, and depression.
The brain’s prefrontal cortex, which helps us regulate emotions and control impulses, also experiences age-related changes. This can make it harder to filter out negative thoughts or control emotional responses the way we did when we were younger.
The Science: Research shows that by age 60, serotonin levels can drop by up to 50% compared to levels in young adults. This isn’t just about feeling sad—it’s about increased irritability, decreased patience, and a shorter fuse when dealing with frustrations.
How It Shows Up:
- Getting annoyed more easily at minor inconveniences
- Difficulty finding joy in activities that used to be pleasurable
- Snapping at loved ones over small things
- Feeling emotionally flat or disconnected
- Struggling to “bounce back” from setbacks
What You Can Do: While we can’t completely stop age-related neurotransmitter decline, certain activities can help:
- Regular aerobic exercise (this is huge—exercise naturally boosts serotonin and dopamine)
- Getting adequate sunlight exposure
- Eating foods rich in tryptophan (turkey, eggs, cheese, salmon)
- Maintaining social connections
- Considering professional help if symptoms are severe
In my Friday morning classes at the Chaplin Family YMCA, I’ve seen firsthand how regular exercise improves people’s moods. The science backs this up—physical activity is one of the most effective natural ways to support healthy neurotransmitter levels.
2. Chronic Pain and Physical Discomfort
Living with constant pain changes a person. I’ve watched this happen with many of my friends and family members over the years.

What’s Happening: Chronic pain—whether from arthritis, back problems, neuropathy, or other conditions—creates a constant source of stress on the body and mind. When you’re hurting all the time, your nervous system stays in a heightened state of alert. This chronic activation of the stress response depletes your emotional reserves.
Pain also disrupts sleep, which compounds the problem. Poor sleep leads to increased pain sensitivity, which leads to worse sleep—it’s a vicious cycle that can make anyone irritable.
The Science: Studies show that people with chronic pain are four times more likely to experience depression or anxiety. The brain regions that process physical pain overlap significantly with areas that process emotional pain. Constant physical discomfort literally rewires the brain’s response to stress and frustration.
Additionally, chronic pain often requires medication, and some pain medications can themselves affect mood and cognitive function as side effects.
How It Shows Up:
- Short temper, especially when asked to do physical tasks
- Withdrawing from social activities
- Difficulty concentrating during conversations
- Responding harshly when others don’t understand their limitations
- Frustration with their own body’s limitations
What You Can Do:
- Work with healthcare providers to manage pain effectively
- Explore gentle movement like tai chi, yoga, or water exercise
- Practice pain management techniques like meditation or breathing exercises
- Consider physical therapy or occupational therapy
- Join support groups for people dealing with similar conditions
My father Ron dealt with increasing physical discomfort in his later years. Looking back, I can see how much of his grumpiness was probably tied to pain he was experiencing but didn’t always talk about.
3. Hormonal Changes

Both men and women experience significant hormonal shifts as they age, and these changes can profoundly affect mood and temperament.
What’s Happening: For women, menopause brings dramatic drops in estrogen and progesterone. These hormones don’t just affect reproduction—they’re deeply involved in mood regulation, sleep quality, and stress response. The fluctuations and eventual decline can trigger mood swings, irritability, anxiety, and depression.
For men, testosterone levels gradually decline with age—typically about 1% per year after age 40. While the change is more gradual than menopause, low testosterone (sometimes called andropause or “male menopause”) can lead to irritability, fatigue, decreased motivation, and mood changes.
The Science: Estrogen influences the production and function of serotonin and other neurotransmitters. When estrogen drops, so does the brain’s ability to regulate mood effectively. Similarly, testosterone affects neurotransmitter systems and brain regions involved in mood regulation.
Thyroid hormone imbalances, which become more common with age, can also significantly impact mood. An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) can cause depression, sluggishness, and irritability.
How It Shows Up:
- Sudden mood swings without clear triggers
- Increased anxiety or worry
- Decreased patience and tolerance
- Irritability combined with fatigue
- Feeling emotionally overwhelmed by situations that wouldn’t have bothered them before
What You Can Do:
- Get hormone levels checked by a healthcare provider
- Discuss hormone replacement therapy options if appropriate
- Maintain regular exercise (this helps balance hormones naturally)
- Manage stress through relaxation techniques
- Ensure adequate sleep
- Consider dietary changes that support hormone health
4. Reduced Brain Volume and Cognitive Changes

This one might surprise you, but the physical shrinking of certain brain regions as we age can directly affect personality and emotional regulation.
What’s Happening: As we age, our brains naturally lose volume, particularly in the frontal lobe and hippocampus. The frontal lobe is like our brain’s executive—it helps us plan, make decisions, control impulses, and regulate emotions. When this area shrinks, our ability to manage frustration and control emotional responses can decline.
The hippocampus, crucial for memory formation, also shrinks with age. This can lead to frustration when we can’t remember things as easily as we once did.
The Science: Brain imaging studies show that the prefrontal cortex can shrink by up to 5% per decade after age 40. This isn’t dementia or Alzheimer’s—it’s normal aging. However, this shrinkage can make us less flexible in our thinking, more set in our ways, and less able to see things from other perspectives.
White matter, which connects different brain regions, also deteriorates with age. This can slow processing speed and make it harder to multitask or adapt to new situations—both of which can be frustrating.
How It Shows Up:
- Becoming more rigid in thinking and routines
- Getting frustrated when things don’t go as planned
- Difficulty adapting to change or new technology
- Increased impatience with complex situations
- Struggling with multitasking
What You Can Do:
- Keep your brain active with learning and mental challenges
- Maintain cardiovascular health (what’s good for the heart is good for the brain)
- Stay socially engaged
- Get regular physical exercise (this actually promotes brain health)
- Practice mindfulness and stress reduction
- Get adequate sleep (crucial for brain health)
In my teaching career and retirement, I’ve made it a point to keep learning. Whether it’s updating my fitness instructor certification or learning about new health research, keeping the brain active matters.
5. Inflammation and the Gut-Brain Connection

Here’s something that wasn’t well understood when my dad Ron was aging, but research now shows that chronic inflammation in the body can directly affect mood and behavior.
What’s Happening: As we age, our bodies tend to develop what scientists call “inflammaging”—chronic, low-grade inflammation throughout the body. This inflammation doesn’t just affect our joints and muscles; it affects our brains too.
The gut microbiome—the trillions of bacteria living in our digestive system—also changes with age. This matters because the gut and brain are intimately connected through what’s called the gut-brain axis. An unhealthy gut can lead to increased inflammation and altered production of neurotransmitters, affecting mood.
The Science: Inflammatory molecules called cytokines can cross the blood-brain barrier and interfere with neurotransmitter function. Studies show that people with higher levels of inflammatory markers are more likely to experience depression, irritability, and cognitive changes.
About 90% of serotonin is actually produced in the gut, not the brain. When gut health declines, serotonin production can be affected, leading to mood changes.
How It Shows Up:
- Irritability combined with digestive issues
- Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
- Mood changes that worsen with poor diet
- Fatigue and emotional flatness
- Increased sensitivity to stress
What You Can Do:
- Eat an anti-inflammatory diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and omega-3 fatty acids
- Include probiotic-rich foods (yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut)
- Reduce processed foods and added sugars
- Stay hydrated
- Manage stress (stress increases inflammation)
- Consider working with a nutritionist
Looking back at my dad’s Harvey’s hamburger habit, I wonder how much his diet contributed to inflammation and, ultimately, his mood changes.
6. Sleep Disruption and Poor Sleep Quality

This is a big one that often gets overlooked. As we age, sleep architecture changes, and many older adults struggle to get quality rest.
What’s Happening: With age comes changes in sleep patterns: less time in deep sleep stages, more frequent wakings, earlier wake times, and increased sleep disorders like sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome. Additionally, many medications that older adults take can interfere with sleep quality.
Poor sleep doesn’t just make us tired—it fundamentally affects how our brains process emotions and respond to stress. When we’re sleep-deprived, the amygdala (our brain’s emotional center) becomes hyperactive, while the prefrontal cortex (which regulates emotions) becomes less effective.
The Science: Research shows that even modest sleep deprivation significantly increases irritability, reduces frustration tolerance, and amplifies negative emotional reactions. Chronic poor sleep is strongly associated with depression and anxiety in older adults.
Sleep is also when the brain clears out metabolic waste products. Without adequate sleep, these toxins accumulate, affecting cognitive function and mood.
How It Shows Up:
- Increased crankiness, especially in the afternoon or evening
- Overreacting to minor frustrations
- Difficulty concentrating
- Mood that improves after a good night’s rest
- Daytime fatigue and irritability
What You Can Do:
- Maintain a consistent sleep schedule
- Create a relaxing bedtime routine
- Limit screen time before bed
- Keep the bedroom cool, dark, and quiet
- Avoid caffeine and heavy meals before bedtime
- Get evaluated for sleep apnea if you snore or wake frequently
- Exercise regularly (but not too close to bedtime)
At 78, I’ve had to be more intentional about my sleep habits than I was in my younger years. It makes a real difference in my mood and patience the next day.
7. Genetic Predisposition and Family Patterns

Finally, we need to talk about genetics—because mood and temperament aren’t just about environment and lifestyle; they’re partly written in our DNA.
What’s Happening: Just as some families pass down height, eye color, or a tendency toward certain diseases, they can also pass down predispositions toward certain mood patterns and mental health conditions. When I mentioned that my father Ron was grumpy, that I experience it too, and that my son shows signs of mood swings, that’s not coincidence—that’s likely genetic influence.
Certain genetic variations affect how our brains produce, use, and break down neurotransmitters. Some people are genetically predisposed to produce less serotonin, have fewer dopamine receptors, or metabolize stress hormones differently.
The Science: Research in behavioral genetics shows that temperament and mood disorders have significant hereditary components. Depression, for instance, has a heritability of about 40-50%, meaning genetics account for nearly half the risk.
Specific genes affect things like:
- Serotonin transporter function
- Dopamine receptor sensitivity
- Stress hormone regulation
- Inflammatory responses
- How medications affect us
Importantly, having genetic risk factors doesn’t guarantee you’ll develop mood problems—it just means you may be more vulnerable, especially when combined with other factors like poor sleep, chronic stress, or health problems.
How It Shows Up:
- Similar mood patterns across multiple generations
- Mood changes that seem disproportionate to circumstances
- Family history of depression, anxiety, or irritability
- Certain triggers consistently affecting multiple family members
- Similar responses to stress across the family tree
What You Can Do: Understanding genetic predisposition is actually empowering because it helps you:
- Recognize early warning signs
- Be proactive about mental health
- Make lifestyle choices that support better mood regulation
- Seek help earlier rather than dismissing it as “just how I am”
- Be compassionate with yourself and family members
- Consider genetic counseling or testing if mental health issues run strongly in your family
When I look at my father Ron, myself, and my son, I can see the family pattern. But I also see how our awareness and choices make a difference. My dad didn’t have the knowledge we have now about brain chemistry, inflammation, and the importance of exercise. I do, and it helps me manage my own tendencies.
The Interaction Effect: Why It’s Usually Not Just One Thing
Here’s what I’ve learned through observation and research: it’s rarely just one of these factors operating in isolation. More often, it’s several working together.
Take my dad Ron, for example. He had genetic predisposition (given our family pattern), probably had chronic inflammation from his diet and smoking, likely experienced hormonal changes, may have had sleep issues, and certainly had some chronic pain in his later years. All of these factors were probably reinforcing each other.
This is why addressing grumpiness as we age requires a comprehensive approach. You can’t just fix one thing and expect everything to improve—though starting with one thing (like exercise or better sleep) can create positive ripple effects.
Moving Forward: What Can We Do?
Understanding these seven physiological and genetic factors doesn’t excuse poor behavior, but it does help us approach the issue with more compassion and better strategies.

- Be honest about what you’re experiencing
- Talk to your healthcare provider
- Prioritize the fundamentals: sleep, exercise, nutrition
- Stay socially connected
- Consider professional mental health support
- Be patient with yourself—change takes time
For Loved Ones: If someone you care about is getting grumpier with age:
- Remember it may not be entirely voluntary or conscious
- Encourage them to see healthcare providers
- Support healthy lifestyle changes
- Don’t take everything personally
- Set boundaries while maintaining compassion
- Suggest activities that promote mood health

At 78, I’ve learned that getting older doesn’t have to mean getting grumpier—but for some of us, there are real physiological and genetic factors working against us. My father Ron struggled with this, I see it in myself at times, and I recognize signs in my son.
But here’s the hopeful part: understanding these factors gives us tools to work with them. Through regular exercise (which I teach every Friday at 9am at the Chaplin Family YMCA), proper sleep, good nutrition, social connection, and appropriate medical care, we can manage many of these factors.
We can’t change our genetics, and we can’t stop all the changes that come with aging. But we can make choices that support better brain chemistry, reduce inflammation, improve sleep, and maintain our cognitive health. And that can make all the difference between becoming the grumpy old person we fear becoming and remaining the engaged, patient, and pleasant person we want to be.
Age may be just a number, but what we do with our bodies and brains as we age—that’s within our control.
