Eye Exercises for Better Vision

Caution!

While eye exercises can be helpful for managing eye strain and improving vision, they are not a substitute for professional eye care. If you have concerns about your vision, consult with an eye doctor.

Eye exercises like the 20-20-20 rule, palming, blinking, and focus change exercises can help improve vision by reducing eye strain, relaxing muscles, and improving focus. These exercises are particularly beneficial for those who spend a lot of time using screens or looking at near objects.

Here’s a more detailed look …

20-20-20 Rule

  • What it is: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
  • Why it helps: This exercise helps relax the eye muscles that can become strained from prolonged near work, like using a computer or reading.
  • How to do it: Simply set a timer for 20 minutes and look at something in the distance for 20 seconds.

Palming

  • What it is:A yogic exercise where you rub your hands together, place them over your closed eyes, and breathe deeply.
  • Why it helps:This exercise helps relax the muscles around the eyes, reducing eye fatigue.
  • How to do it:Rub your hands together to generate warmth, then gently cup them over your closed eyes and breathe deeply for a few minutes.

Blinking

  • What it is:Consciously blinking more frequently, especially when using digital devices.
  • Why it helps:Blinking helps keep your eyes moist and refreshed. We tend to blink less when focusing on a screen, which can lead to dry and tired eyes.
  • How to do it:Close your eyes, pause for a few seconds, then open them again. You can also consciously squeeze your eyelids tightly while your eyes are closed for extra stimulation.

Focus Change

  • What it is: Alternating focus between near and far objects.
  • Why it helps: This exercise helps improve focus and flexibility in the eyes.
  • How to do it: Hold your finger a few inches away from your eye and focus on it. Slowly move your finger away from your face, holding your focus. Look away into the distance and then focus back on your finger as you bring it closer to your face.

Pencil Push Ups

Hold a pencil at arm’s length and focus on the tip, gradually bringing it closer to your eyes while maintaining focus.

Near and Far Focus

Focus on a thumb held 10 inches away, then look at something 10 to 20 feet away, repeating several times.

Eye Rolls

Close your eyes and slowly roll them in a circular motion.

Important Considerations

  • Consult an eye doctor: If you have concerns about your vision, it’s essential to consult with an eye doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
  • Individualized approach: The best eye exercises for you may depend on your specific needs and the advice of your eye doctor.
  • Consistency is key: To see results, you’ll need to consistently practice these exercises.
